The Opportunity

The Vice President of Development is an entrepreneurial, data-driven and results-focused leader who will deepen Jumpstart’s impact and broaden the organization’s scope of work across the country by driving success in fundraising, staff management, and team effectiveness. The individual in this role leverages strong data and analytical skills to drive decision making and team performance positioning the organization to achieve and sustain fundraising capabilities in support of the organization’s 5-year Strategic Plan and companion $120 million growth capital campaign.  The leader must have the experience and knowledge to help build an internal system that supports continued growth. The Vice President of Development reports to, and works closely with, the Chief Development and Marketing Officer and the Associate Vice-President of Development as a key thought partner in assessing current and future fundraising opportunities and strategies that support organizational growth and financial health. The VP of Development is an integral member of Jumpstart’s Vice President Team and Leadership Team, responsible for developing organizational strategy, policy, and growth plans. The Vice President of Development manages a national network of three Directors of Development, an AVP and is part of a 14-person national fundraising team.

Specific Responsibilities include:


  • Manage, coach, and support a cohesive network of high functioning Directors of Development with SMART goals and timely feedback to meet or exceed organization’s annual revenue goal.
  • Develop and engage direct reports through professional and individual development plans with goal of staff retention.
  • Foster a strong organizational culture in the workplace aligned with Jumpstart’s core values and commitment to DEI.


  • Work with Directors of Development to leverage and drive fundraising strategy, opportunity, and success of local advisory boards in multiple geographies across the country: Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco.
  • Work with Development Directors and Vice President cohort to build a Culture of Advancement with a shared understanding of revenue planning, projections, analysis, related strategies and the symbiotic relationship between Development and the rest of the organization.
  • Collaborate with members of Leadership Team to inform organizational priorities and also to shape fundraising strategies and opportunities.
  • Work across a highly matrixed team and in direct partnership with the Vice President of Marketing, Communication and Brand to build a best in class moves management Program with the distinct goal of increasing the number of Jumpstart donors building a strong base for annual giving and the foundation for a major gifts program.
  • Participate with CDMO, CEO, and National Board of Directors and Local Advisory Boards in overall strategy, plan, and execution of multi-year fundraising to support the $120 million growth capital campaign.


  • Manage and grow a portfolio of major donor relationships across constituencies, including individual, foundation, and corporate sources.
  • Work collaboratively with Directors of Developments and Advisory Boards to ensure Growth Capital Campaign and Read for the Record events meet or exceed established goals and are well planned and executed.
  • Collaborate on strategy related to the Corporation for National and Community Service and state commission grants, as appropriate.


  • Ensure network-wide consistency of best practices surrounding development operations, including data management via salesforce, gift processing, fundraising policy/procedures, event management, and other related development operations to create efficiency and provide for improved decision-making.
Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in development and fundraising in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment focused on best practices.
  • Strong comprehensive analytical skills with the ability to use data to drive results, inform decision making, build revenue plans for short-term and long-term strategic growth.
  • Innovative strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to plan and implement in a demanding, fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Significant experience in moves management, ranging from donor identification through solicitation and stewardship with a proven track record of achieving revenue targets including closing gifts of six figures of greater.
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter with a proven ability to motivate staff to reach ambitious goals in a high-growth environment.
  • Strong manager with ability and commitment to manage and develop a high-functioning team of development professionals.
  • Ability to navigate geographically diverse philanthropic markets.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with an ability to leverage own networks to broaden Jumpstart’s base of support.
  • Strong communication, including written, public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Outstanding organization skills and high attention to detail; demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadline-driven priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed, to meet with donors, boards, prospects, and others who are positioned to help advance the organization.
  • Understanding of AmeriCorps and National Service Programs is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Advanced degree preferred.
Compensation & Benefits

$165,000 – $175,000 along with excellent benefits and a great, mission-driven work environment.
