Position Overview

The Prospect Researcher is a key member of the Development Operations team and Development Department and will serve as the primary prospect researcher on the Development Operations team.

The ideal applicant is curious, detail-oriented, skilled at working with data and within databases, able to analyze and synthesize data, understands the needs of external-facing fundraisers and communications staff, and is excited to help advance Jumpstart’s mission through fundraising. This position reports to the Development Operations Manager.

Specific Responsibilities

Prospect Research

  • Complete donor and prospect research profiles upon request from relationship managers, Development leadership, and organization leadership.
  • Interpret complex documents such as corporate proxy statements and insider stock filings, and create concise research profiles distilled from biographical information, financial data, news, philanthropic history and other sources.
  • Proactively identify, research, and qualify existing donors, across donor types, to help relationship managers prioritize and grow their portfolios.
  • Provide research profiles for events and meetings, to assist relationship managers in prospect identification and cultivation.
  • Manage mass screenings of existing donors. Ensure data is captured in Salesforce and utilized to its fullest extent to help relationship managers prioritize their portfolios and deepen their relationships with donors and prospects.
  • Maintain relationships with existing research system and platform contacts and recommend tools for additional investment to enhance Jumpstart’s prospect research efforts in service of our 5-year revenue goal.
  • Stay up-to-date on current events, especially news that relates to early education, higher education, and social justice.
  • Subscribe to and monitor media for top prospect companies, large donors, foundations, peer organizations, and the like. Alert key internal stakeholders to important industry or political news, and news regarding their donors.
  • Routinely review key market social diaries.
  • Review similar organization’s event lists and annual reports to compare prospects.
  • Create and monitor Google alerts for key constituencies.

Portfolio and Pipeline Development

  • In partnership with Development Operations Manager and AVP of Development, propose, design, and implement strategies to enhance the work of external-facing development staff, including but not limited to portfolios, donor segmenting, and moves management strategies.
  • Actively participate in fundraising strategy meetings with staff across the Development Division to support Jumpstart’s fundraising activity and make recommendations to maximize the design and effectiveness of donor portfolios.

Data Maintenance

  • Review, modify, and in some cases develop systems for data entry that will allow for optimum reporting.
  • During research, update Salesforce with relevant information to ensure strong data maintenance.

Gift Processing (max 5 hours/week during peak gift processing time in January)

  • Process donations to Jumpstart and support the Development Operations Manager on tasks related to gift processing.
  • Process and email or mail gift receipts.
  • Support other duties as assigned by AVP, Development and Development Operations Manager.

Qualifications

Required

  • 2-4 years of related professional experience
  • Experience researching potential donors and evaluating wealth and other financial information
  • Experience utilizing CRM databases
  • Experience working with external-facing Development staff
  • Evidence of strong project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Rapid problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Commitment to confidentiality and handling prospect information with discretion
  • Commitment to Jumpstart’s mission and values of Joy, Learning, Community, Social Justice, and Inclusive Leadership
  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines
  • Experience and comfort working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various locations as necessary for completion of job duties
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Planner)
  • Curious and interested in learning within a fast-paced organization
  • On-going commitment and interest in social justice or diversity, equity and inclusion work

Preferred or Ideal

  • Experience utilizing Salesforce
  • Experience with capital campaigns
  • Experience interpreting complex financial statements and documents

Start Date

December 2021 (desired start date, yet position open until filled)

Travel

Approximately 10% regional travel, as needed, to support fundraising events

Location

  • Flexible location from one of Jumpstart’s offices in Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY, San Francisco, CA; or Washington DC
  • Applicants must be able to work from one of these locations on a full-time basis

Salary & Benefits

Salary – $70,000; along with excellent benefits and a great mission-driven work environment
