Position Overview

The Director of Content is responsible for providing writing leadership to Jumpstart’s Development Division, which includes fundraising, organization-related communications, and projects to enhance the quality and quantity of Jumpstart’s fundraising communications. The ideal candidate will be an excellent written communicator, demonstrate a high level of project management skill, be highly organized, willing to take initiative, and be able to take ownership of projects. This position reports to the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications and has 1 to 2 direct reports.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior leaders on projects to communicate Jumpstart’s organization-wide stance, strategy, and response to both internal and external partners. Examples may include crisis communication, strategic plan communication, etc.
  • Collaborate with Program Directors, Development Directors, and members of the VP team and Executive team to generate new written content to describe Jumpstart’s program and objectives, including identifying ways to collect and disseminate updates from field staff to Development staff.
  • Lead the proposal, grant, and report writing and editing process for identified institutional and corporate donors and prospects across the Jumpstart network.
  • Craft compelling written materials for use in cultivating, stewarding, and soliciting institutional, corporate, and selected individual donors.
  • Manage two Writers, including performance management, professional development, oversight of their work product, and project management.
  • Lead and manage an effective team that is high functioning and able to achieve department goals. Develop the skill sets of team members so that they can work collaboratively to meet organizational and department needs. Demonstrate the level of leadership the fosters a team culture of service and the values of Jumpstart.
  • Work with Marketing & Communications Team to develop, implement, and maintain a House Style Guide and Core Messaging Bank to support all Development staff in consistent and effective external communications.
  • Participate in the execution of moves management strategies.
  • In collaboration with the General Counsel, manage the grant writing process for government grants, including AmeriCorps proposals.
  • Collaborate with the marketing & communications team to create and/or edit select copy for collateral which may include, Jumpstart’s annual report, Scribbles, Read for the Record, and other event collateral, content for, newsletters, and other specialized content for use in print and digital media.
  • Stay abreast of grant making trends and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications.



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant professional experience
  • Minimum of five years of successful experience in grant-writing or technical writing
  • Excellent writing skills, including grammar-checking and proofreading abilities
  • Creative, clear, and compelling writing style with a scrupulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Command of effective storytelling
  • Willingness to take initiative and lead projects among peers and in multi-stakeholder groups
  • Strong project management and analytical skills, including the ability to balance multiple priorities while performing at a high-level in a demanding and fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance
  • Clear enthusiasm for development or marketing work and Jumpstart’s mission

  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Ability to proficiently use MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher)

Preferred or Ideal

  • Knowledge of the fundraising process and understanding of work with donors
  • Knowledge of AmeriCorps funding or process

Start Date

January/February 2022 (desired start date, yet position open until filled)


  • Flexible location from one of Jumpstart’s Offices in Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, or Washington, DC
  • Applicants must be able to work from one of these locations on a full-time basis

Salary & Benefits

Salary – $85,000 – $90,000 commensurate with education and experience; along with excellent benefits and a great mission-driven work environment
