How to Participate

Each year, Jumpstart selects one book to be our Read for the Record book, to help highlight the importance of early literacy and celebrate the power of reading. We work with our publishing partner to create a special edition of the book, with special content to help bring the story to life, and to help engage young readers in discussions about the book, to boost their understanding and enjoyment of reading!

Then, on our Read for the Record Day in October (2018 Date TBA), we invite everyone around the country to read with us! Teachers read with their classrooms, families read with their children, volunteers host special events at their local libraries and community centers, and even entire cities get involved, with the mayor, police force, team mascots, and others joining in the fun.

Here’s how you can join the fun:

Get the Book!

Order your copy of the special edition campaign book to join the fun, and help support Jumpstart’s work in communities around the country. Bulk discounts are available to large groups and school districts. Our next book will be announced in Spring 2018.

Plan your event!

Jumpstart provides activities and tools to further the story and help you plan how to celebrate Read for the Record in your community. Individuals may read at home or visit their child’s classroom as a guest reader, while corporations may purchase books to donate to local organizations and plan community-wide reading days. However you celebrate the power of reading, your participation in Read for the Record helps put more books into the hands of children.

Register to read!

Now that you have your event planned, let us know how many people you plan to read with – it can be as few as 2 people, or as many as 10,000 or more!!!

Spread the Word!

Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience, connecting people across the country and around the world to read the same book on the same day and share the joy and connection of reading. Share this page, or use our social media tools to tell your friends and family about Read for the Record and invite them to join.

Read with us on Read for the Record Day!

2018 Date TBA

Let us know how you did!

After reading, report the total number of children and adults you read with on the big day to help us tally our total as we try to beat our own record for most people reading the same book on the same day.

Together, we can help all children build the key language and literacy skills they need to take on the world.
