How to Participate

Each year, Jumpstart selects one book to be our official Read for the Record book, to help highlight the importance of early literacy and celebrate the power of reading. We work with a publishing partner to create a special edition of the book, that includes additional reading tips and guiding questions to help bring the story to life and engage young readers in discussions about the book, and to boost their understanding and enjoyment of reading!

Then, on our Read for the Record day on October 25, 2018, we invite everyone around the world to read with us! Teachers read with their classrooms, families read with their children, volunteers host special events at their local libraries and community centers, and even entire cities get involved, with the mayor, police force, sports team mascots, and others joining in the fun.

Here’s how you can join the fun:

Get the Book!

Order your copy of the special edition campaign book Maybe Something Beautiful to join the fun, and help support Jumpstart’s work in communities around the country. Bulk discounts are available to large groups and school districts ordering 50 or more books.

Pledge to read!

Now that you have your event planned, let us know how many people you plan to read with — whether its 2 or 10,000 readers, we can’t wait to read with you! Click here to pledge to read with us.

Plan your event!

Jumpstart provides activities and resources to further the story and help you plan how to celebrate Read for the Record in your community. Individuals may read at home or visit their child’s classroom as a guest reader, while corporations may purchase books to donate to local organizations and plan community-wide reading days. However you celebrate the power of reading, your participation in Read for the Record helps put more books into the hands of children.

Spread the Word!

Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience, connecting people across the country and around the world to read the same book on the same day and share the joy and connection of reading. Share this page, or use our social media tools to tell your friends and family about Read for the Record and invite them to join!

Read with us on Read for the Record Day!

October 25, 2018!

Let us know how you did!

After reading, report the total number of children and adults you read with on the big day to help us tally our total as we try to beat our own record for most people reading the same book on the same day.

Together, we can help all children build the key language and literacy skills they need to take on the world.
