Position Overview

The Senior Director of People and Culture is a passionate learning and development professional with strong coaching, facilitation and group development skills who wants to use their background and experience to design, support and implement Jumpstart’s employee development strategy and create staff learning and training programs/initiatives for a large, national non-profit.

The Senior Director of People and Culture enhances the skills, performance, productivity and quality of work of Jumpstart’s people. The Senior Director of People and Culture will create and implement tools and trainings used in the development and improvement of talent management, human resources, performance management and general learning programs/ initiatives. This role will support the planning and implementation of the Jumpstart Leadership Institute (JLI), the organization’s signature network-wide community gathering event.

The Senior Director of People and Culture works closely with the Talent Management Leadership Team to ensure this work is aligned with Jumpstart’s long-term vision and goals, organizational imperatives and strategic plan priorities. This position reports to the AVP of People and Culture and is a member of the Talent Management Department that supports a national nonprofit organization.

Specific Responsibilities

Talent and Organizational Development

  • Remains current on best practices for adult learning theory, DEI learning theory, organizational development, human resource and performance management, succession planning, instructional design and training
  • Develop, support and implement activities critical to advancing the organization’s Staff Learning and Training Framework, Strategy, Programs and Initiatives

-Apply best practices in adult learning theory, group development, facilitation, DEI learning theory and frameworks, and the EDU Training and Learning framework, to support the development of a framework for Jumpstart Staff Learning and Training

– Contribute and support the development of a scope and sequence for Staff Learning and Training Programs and Initiatives including an organizational annual learning curriculum and annual learning calendar

– Contribute to the establishment of learning and training programs aimed at identifying and developing a set of core competencies and capabilities for staff that will enhance opportunities for professional development and growth

– Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with teams/departments in order to have an ongoing understanding of how learning can best meet employee development, business needs and objectives

– Support and enhance the design, functionality and utilization of the Learning Management System (LMS)

  • Partner with the Talent Management Leadership Team to promote and advance strategic initiatives related to organizational design and team effectiveness through learning design

– Contribute to building internal capacity by ensuring managers have the skills, training and knowledge to effectively lead and develop their teams

– Collaborate with the Talent Management Team to design, strengthen, enhance, and implement performance management systems, processes and tools (includes annual performance goal setting, online individual development plans, mid-year check-ins, performance reviews and/or end of year reflections)

– Act as a key advisor to the AVP for People and Culture on planned interventions in identified areas of opportunity for improving company culture and behavior based on results of organizational surveys and assessments

– Act as a key advisor to the Talent Management Team on strategic organizational and leadership development efforts to improve overall organizational effectiveness, including competency modelling and organizational mapping; feedback models and conflict resolution models; succession and action planning to identify and develop high potential staff for future roles within the organization

Staff Learning and Training Content Development

  • Develop effective instructional design for staff learning and trainings
  • Create, write, edit and conduct ongoing research for documents related to staff learning and training planning and implementation
  • Author, edit and facilitate training and professional development for staff.
  • Create and develop facilitator training for Jumpstart staff
  • Create, develop and implement staff learning and trainings on how to effectively collaborate at work including being a skillful group member
  • Develop content presented in a way that meets best practices for adult learning and delivered through a variety of modes (e.g. online, in-person, case-studies, simulations, training guides, webinars, coaching, etc.)
  • Develop and facilitate training content that is backed by the most recent research and best practices in human resources and diversity, equity and inclusion

Operations and Project Management for Staff Learning and Training Development, Improvement & Implementation

  • Co-design and support the creation and implementation of Jumpstart’s Learning Institute (JLI) including scheduling, program content, and advanced/logistics.
  • Co-design the development of an annual project plan for creating and implementing staff training modules
  • Contribute to systems management as part of the Staff Learning and Training team in Talent Management, including areas such as materials management, book ordering, and online content tracking.
  • Manage posting, organization and monitoring of resources in online learning management systems as needed
  • Develops and maintains organizational communications such as emails and intranet postings to ensure staff have knowledge of learning and training events and resources

Collaboration and Partnership

  • Collaborate with Talent Management colleagues in cross-reading of researched documents created for staff learning and training planning and implementation. Apply diversity, equity and inclusion lens to cross-reading activities
  • Collaborate with Talent Management colleagues, DEI Council and Initiatives and others to ensure that DEI content is embedded into tools, processes, Orientation & Onboarding (O&O) and general staff trainings created by department
  • Partner with external partners and vendors in execution of Jumpstart Staff Learning and Training plan as needed

Measurement and Reporting

  • Analyze data from needs assessment, event planning and feedback surveys and other data gathering tools for developing insights on professional learning and training needs of staff
  • Conduct follow-up focus groups or studies of completed staff training to gain insights or evaluate and measure results
  • Develop learning and training ad hoc reports, as assigned

Other

  • Successfully work, collaborate and partner with colleagues in Talent Management department
  • Establish strong working relationships and connections throughout the network to represent Jumpstart and Talent Management by providing an exceptional level of customer service to all current and prospective staff. Act as a role model in all internal and external interactions.
  • Participate in Jumpstart committees and contribute to organizational initiatives
  • Participate in other TM tasks, responsibilities and special projects as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • 10 plus years’ related on-the-job experience
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field
  • Certification to teach group facilitation and group development (examples: Adaptive Schools Associate Trainer, PEAR Certified Facilitator & Trainer)
  • Experience designing learning and training for managers with a focus on Equity
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of adult learning concepts
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of coaching and feedback
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of conflict resolution
  • DEI design, facilitation, and teaching experience
  • Experience creating training and learning programs designed to improve the work experience of a highly qualified and motivated staff
  • Exceptional record of strong oral, written, and presentation (especially facilitation and training) skills
  • Strong emotional intelligence, active listening skills and a deep customer service orientation
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to be flexible and accommodate shifting priorities
  • Proven project management skills, including ability to plan, implement and manage high level and logistical work and wide-scale (organizational) events
  • A keen understanding of what motivates people and how to build flexible incentives that respond to diverse learning, work, communication and other styles.
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Demonstrated ability to use advanced functions of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) the internet and web-based platforms
  • Outstanding cultural competency and sensitivity to all dimensions of diversity in the workplace
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and communities
  • Commitment to Jumpstart’s mission and core values of community, joy, social justice, learning and inclusive leadership

  • Experience in the nonprofit and education sector

Travel

Travel may be required for team retreats and network-wide retreat planning and execution

Salary & Benefits

Salary – $120,000 annually commensurate with education and experience; along with excellent benefits  and a great mission-driven work environment
