Jumpstart’s October Newsflash

Dear Jumpstart,

October has been an eventful month for us at Jumpstart! Our Site Managers are in the early stages of starting sessions in classrooms, we introduced our new Alumni Advisory Council to further support our alumni as they enter the workforce, and we are about to hold our 18th Annual Read for the Record celebration on October 26th! As we embark on another school year, we are thrilled to see the next steps in our efforts to meet the needs of today’s children and tomorrow’s educators.

Read for the Record builds on our direct service programming by uplifting early literacy and access to quality, inclusive books. This year we are holding a panel on the importance of having access to these types of books for young children and are proud that this year’s Read for the Record selection, With Lots of Love, is a celebration of diverse experiences around immigration. You can watch the panel and explore our other virtual activities during Read for the Record week by visiting readfortherecord.org. We look forward to celebrating with you on the 26th!

I hope you enjoy learning about the work going on at Jumpstart. We are grateful to have you as part of our Jumpstart community.

Program and Policy Updates

PROGRAM UPDATE

The fall is a busy time of year for Jumpstart sites! Site Managers are working hard to get their programs up and running: finalizing plans for the pace and structure of their program year, communicating with their preschool partners about starting sessions, and recruiting students to participate in Jumpstart – with exciting results so far! Over 1,400 Corps members have been welcomed into Jumpstart programs across the country just one month into our program year. In honor of this year’s Read for the Record book, With Lots of Love, Jumpstart is tracking our progress to our enrollment goal by filling in a piñata!

POLICY AND GOVERNMENT RELATIONS – ADVOCACY UPDATE

Jumpstart’s Policy & Government Relations team welcomes two new members, Ryan Corrigan and Sabrina Abreu, who joined in September as our new FAO Schwarz Fellows. The FAO Schwarz Fellowship is a two-year program that pairs passionate young social advocates with partner non-profits across the country.

Read for the Record

long last, Read for the Record 2023 is finally here! Our week of celebrations uplifting the importance of early literacy and inclusive literature begins with our panel in Los Angeles on the need for children to have access to inclusive books. You can view the panel on Monday by signing up here.

We will also have many more virtual programming options available to enhance your reading of With Lots of Love. These include readings by the author, by community members and literacy champions, a dance playlist, and many more activities.

Last year over 2.1 million learners joined our celebration in 9 countries and 51 states and territories and we are hoping to reach 2.2 million this year! Pledge to read and ensure your celebration is counted in our grand total. We hope you are able to join us on the 26th!

Alumni Spotlight

Jumpstart is thrilled to announce the launch of the Jumpstart Alumni Advisory Council (AAC), an initiative under the Stadler-Waldron Accelerator for Transformative Leadership in ECE. The Accelerator is named for both the Stadler and Waldron families who have deeply influenced Jumpstart’s growth and evolution through their generosity, leadership, board service, and partnership, honoring their unprecedented contributions to model transformative philanthropy, to publicly celebrate and inspire our Corps Members and alumni, and to fuel Jumpstart’s mission.

The Alumni Advisory Council is made up of five outstanding alumni with diverse cultural and professional experiences. Members of the AAC will serve as critical champions of Jumpstart’s work to advance the pipeline of future educators working in early learning settings. Members of the AAC will share their expertise, knowledge, and experience to help provide the highest quality program to Jumpstart Alumni.

The council members will have the unique opportunity to develop their skills as leaders and advocates for ECE and provide feedback and recommendations for offerings and experiences available to Alumni.

Learn about members of the AAC here.
