Jumpstart Statement: Black Lives Matter

In the days since our Call to Action last week encouraging support of national organizations engaged in racial justice work, the march toward justice, equality, and equity has rapidly grown across our nation.

Thousands of people have shown up to take a stand that Black Lives Matter. The recent deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor as a result of police force and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery are among the many of our Black brothers’ and sisters’ lives senselessly taken. As an organization committed to racial justice, Jumpstart wants our Black staff, Corps Members, alumni, children and families we serve, partner communities, and donors to know that we stand with you: Black Lives Matter.

Jumpstart firmly believes that we cannot make progress towards our vision of a world where every child is prepared to succeed without understanding, acknowledging, and working to dismantle the structures and systems that hold racism in place. We know that this work requires a collaborative approach from multiple players to address a range of interconnected inequities, including criminal justice, health, housing, immigration, and more. To provide a truly equitable opportunity for all children in the United States, all of these oppressive systems must be torn down.

There are countless ways you can join in the fight against racism: speak, vote, advocate for our children and families, hold your elected officials accountable, support organizations leading racial justice work in your community, and ask the people in your network to join your efforts.

The change we seek requires many of us working in a multitude of ways. We thank you for your commitment.
