Jumpstart Celebrates 25th Anniversary at Annual Scribbles to Novels Gala Featuring Acclaimed Authors Including Elizabeth Strout, Christina Geist and Vashti Harrison

Celebrities and Patrons Join Together to Celebrate and Support Quality Early Education for All Children

NEW YORK (March 28, 2019) — Jumpstart, a national early education non-profit, will host its 14th annual Scribbles to Novels gala on April 11, 2019 in New York City at Pier 60 located in the iconic Chelsea Piers. Scribbles to Novels is a night of celebrating the power of the written word and shining a spotlight on the importance of high-quality early learning for all children. Fashion photographer Nigel Barker — a member of Jumpstart’s National Board of Directors — will entertain 450 expected guests as the event’s emcee. The evening will begin with an Authors Circle, where literary enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet and greet a host of accomplished authors. In celebration of Jumpstart’s 25th anniversary, the organization will recognize local and national honorees from Jumpstart’s 25 Faces campaign which acknowledges individuals who have made a strong impact on the organization over the years, including actor Tina Fey, Jumpstart co-founder David Carmel and National Board Co-Chair Chris Stadler.

Jumpstart is honored to welcome Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer Winner and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Olive Kitteridge and the forthcoming (Fall 2019) novel Olive, Again, as part of this year’s Authors Circle. Her literary work includes a long list of award-winning titles including Anything Is Possible, winner of The Story Prize; My Name Is Lucy Barton, longlisted for the Man Booker Prize; The Burgess Boys, named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post and NPR; Abide with Me, a national bestseller; and Amy and Isabelle, winner of the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize.

The event’s Authors Circle will also feature a diverse panel of celebrated writers, including media executive turned marketing pro Christina Geist, author of the forthcoming Sorry Grownups, You Can’t Go to School as well as Buddy’s Bedtime Battery; artist, writer and filmmaker Vashti Harrison, author and illustrator of the bestselling Little Leaders: Bold Women In Black History and Little Dreamers: Visionary Women Around the World; illustrator Laura Cornell who illustrated Me, Myselfie and I: A Cautionary Tale — the 12th picture book collaboration by actress and author Jamie Lee Curtis; Brown University Political Science Professor Corey Brettschneider, author of The Oath and the Office A Guide to the Constitution for Future Presidents; Charles and Mary Beard Professor of History at Rutgers University Erica Armstrong Dunbar, author of NEVER CAUGHT: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of their Runaway Slave; Rakesh Satyal, author of Lambda Literary Award-winning  novel Blue Boy and No One Can Pronounce My Name; and Karina Yan Glaser, New York Times bestselling author of The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, The Vanderbeekers and the Hidden Garden, and The Vanderbeekers to the Rescue (9/17/19).

Last year’s Scribbles to Novels Gala in New York City raised more than $1 million for Jumpstart’s local programs in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Jumpstart held a successful Scribbles to Novels fundraising gala in San Francisco in March 2019 and will hold another gala in Boston on Thursday, May 16, 2019.
