March 29, 2018 (FRESNO, CA) — Earlier this week, Jumpstart President & CEO Naila Bolus co-authored an article featured in The Fresno Bee with Joseph I. Castro, President of California State University — Fresno and Jumpstart National Board member. This op-ed article makes a case for why programs like AmeriCorps and Federal Work Study are critical for creating a well-developed workforce across the country.
These programs represent a win-win for students and communities: they lower students’ overall debt burden, increase access to higher education, and provide work experience that also benefits the local community. We believe deeply in the need to invest in programs that not only serve college students, but also the children and families who live in our communities.
Jumpstart applauds congressional leadership for investing in AmeriCorps and Federal Work Study in this current year’s budget. However, each year, funding for these programs is at stake and now is the time to ensure that they are protected in the 2019 budget.
