Univision: From the Streets to the Classrooms

March 16, 2018 (SAN FRANCISCO) — Univision recently featured Jumpstart alumna, Stephanie Estrada, in their Nuestros Maestros series, highlighting Hispanic educators marking a difference in their communities. Estrada served in Jumpstart’s Corps at San Francisco State University as a part of the Jumpstart Early Practicum. Through scholarships, encouraging teachers, and the support of her family, Stephanie was able to go to college and complete her early education teaching requirements. Stephanie is thrilled to now teach mostly Hispanic students and connect with them as a Latina teacher at Mission Community Center, making them feel comfortable to learn and supporting them in achieving their goals.

In college, I took a course on Latinos and the teacher was Hispanic, so I was very reflected in her, I began to reflect and I said to myself, maybe I can be a teacher — if she can do it, I can too. Having Latino teachers sends a message: it tells the children that they can do it and that it is possible to pursue their dreams.
