Volunteer with Jumpstart’s Reading Program in Washington, DC

By the age of 3, children born into low-income families hear roughly 30 million fewer words than their more affluent peers. That’s where Jumpstart comes in.

Jumpstart seeks reliable volunteers to work with students for at least 2-3 hours a week from Monday to Thursday in an after-school space from February through May. Group sizes will typically range from 3-6 students.

  • No teaching experience required
  • You must be a current high school senior or older
  • You must pass a background check
  • You must be able to commit to at least 2-3 hours per week

Jumpstart needs volunteers to provide reading and tutoring support to pre-kindergarten students in an elementary school in Ward 5 of Washington, DC to work towards closing the kindergarten readiness gap. As a volunteer you will work in small groups with students using Jumpstart activities that are designed to focus specifically on building the key skills that research shows are critical in supporting children’s language, literacy, and social-emotional development.
