At Jumpstart, the end of August signals the culmination of one program year and the start of the next on September 1. In many school districts, it is also Back to School time, with new preschoolers and kindergarteners stepping into classrooms for the very first time, and college students returning to campuses around the country.
As we prepare to return to service this fall, with the events of Charlottesville still very much on our minds, it is increasingly important to ensure that these classrooms are inclusive, safe, and welcoming for all of the young preschoolers we serve, and for the college students and community members who make up Jumpstart’s volunteer Corps.
The writer, feminist, and civil rights activist Audre Lorde said, “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” Jumpstart is committed to recognizing and honoring the differences that exist within our children, our Corps members, our staff, and our supporters, just as we are committed to identifying and dismantling the structures and systems that perpetuate bias and inequity.
Thank you for being a part of our unique, diverse Jumpstart family, and for helping us work towards greater inclusion and equity for all.
With gratitude,
Naila Bolus
