August 28, 2017 (NEW YORK) — On Friday, August 11, the Jumpstart New York City office celebrated the close of a very successful Summer Bridge program! Through this program, 35 Jumpstart volunteers from around the country helped to develop the language, literacy, and social-emotional skills of 445 children in New York City who had never received the Jumpstart program before.
The final Summer Bridge celebration allowed Jumpstart volunteers to appreciate and reflect on the important work they’d done throughout the summer. The event also included a panel discussion highlighting careers in education and the non-profit sector. Panelists included Elizabeth Clay Roy, Chief of Staff at Phipps Neighborhoods and Co-Director of South Bronx Rising Together; Luz Cano, Family Reading Room Manager for Phipps Neighborhoods (and Jumpstart alum!); Amber Cartwright, Jumpstart Site Manager for Columbia University; Jessica McPherron, Institutional Giving Manager for Jumpstart; and Samantha Palley, Recruitment Manager in Early Childhood at the NYC Department of Education. The panelists discussed their personal education stories, shared career advice, and talked about what lead them to their current roles. Finally, they shared how they hoped to see the education field grow and change. The event was a great celebration of the Summer Bridge program, and an inspiring opportunity to explore ways to continue working towards positive change in the future.
