SAN FRANCISCO (April 27, 2017) — At Jumpstart’s Scribbles to Novels event on April 27 we celebrated the power of the written word. It was an amazing evening where the venue transported us to a Wine Country weekend escape and set the stage for a heart-filled evening. At the core of it all was passion for early literacy and ensuring all children receive a high-quality education.
We listened to best-selling author Frances Dinkelspiel speak about how her book, Tangled Vines, came to fruition and how writing the book reunited her with a childhood teacher. We honored Gordy Holterman for his years of leadership on Jumpstart’s Northern California Advisory Board, and he eloquently expressed his devotion to ensuring every child from under-resourced neighborhoods get the same chance their affluent neighbors do. Yusuf Nessary, a Jumpstart Corps member alumnus and emcee, shared how far he’s gone since being the featured Jumpstart Corp member at Jumpstart’s 2012 Scribbles to Novels. Jumpstart Corps member Karla Gutierrez captivated us with her Jumpstart story and how her own life mirrors the children that she’s serving now as a Jumpstart Corps member. Barely a year under her belt, Karla is already making an impact on the lives of young children.
Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, donors, and attendees, we raised over $600,000 to support Jumpstart’s work. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of the movement toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. As Corps member Karla shared, “it’s important to remember that the children we serve are the roses growing from concrete…” and we need to make sure they thrive.
