Annual Event Will Commemorate Jumpstart’s 20th Anniversary
WHAT:
As part of a year-long celebration to commemorate two decades of service to preschool children in low-income neighborhoods, Jumpstart, a national early education organization, will host its second annual Scribbles to Novels celebration on Wednesday, May 8 at the University Club of Washington DC.
Jumpstart’s Scribbles to Novels will feature addresses from three distinguished authors that highlight the importance of literature and education in their lives, raising awareness of Jumpstart’s mission to work toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Notable guests include:
- Dinaw Mengestu, 2012 MacArthur Fellow
- Tom Healy, chairman of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship board
- Richard L. Holm, former paramilitary adviser, operations officer, senior manager and chief of station for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
Scribbles to Novels will also feature an address from The Honorable David Grosso, at-large member of the Council of the District of Columbia as well as a speech from a current Jumpstart Corps member, Alexandria Yoko Thompson.
Jumpstart serves more than 700 children through the help of more than 300 volunteers throughout Washington, DC.
