The Power of Books

by Bo Kaplan

Bo Kaplan is President and CEO of Lakeshore Learning Materials, which has been supporting early childhood education since 1954.

Research shows that if children are exposed to books early in life, they’re more likely to develop the literacy skills needed for lifelong success—both inside and outside the classroom. Like Jumpstart, Lakeshore believes in the power of books and the importance of reading with children every day. That’s one of the reasons why we’re partnering with Jumpstart once again for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record®, presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation. Read for the Record not only brings children, parents and teachers together to celebrate literacy and break a world reading record, but it also highlights the importance of giving children a quality education early in life to ensure their future success.

Lakeshore has been fortunate enough to be part of the early education industry for nearly 60 years, serving our communities through workshops, outreach programs and active participation in state and national education associations. Through our partnerships with nonprofit organizations, as well as our own research and development, we’ve created products that boost early brain development, help children reach developmental milestones and build school-readiness skills.

This year for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, we’ve created an exclusive craft kit designed to enrich the 2012 campaign book, Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad by David Soman and Jacky Davis. This kit helps children experience the magic of the book, allowing them to re-create characters from the story. For more information about the Ladybug Girl Craft Kit, click here. A portion of the proceeds from the kit will benefit Jumpstart’s early education programs.

Additionally, Lakeshore is very excited to celebrate Jumpstart’s Read for the Record in all 56 of our stores across the country on September 29, 2012. Parents and children are invited to come to Lakeshore Learning Stores and enjoy hourly readings of Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad, plus fun crafts and activities.
