Jumpstart in Northern California

When Jumpstart Northern California launched in 1999, we served just 100 children in underserved neighborhoods in San Francisco. With the help and generosity of our supporters, our region continues to grow and inspire children to learn, college students to teach, families to become involved in their children's education, and communities to progress together.

During the school year, more than 780 preschool children throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, who are most at risk of school failure, join 200 college Corps members to grow and learn together in Jumpstart sessions. And it’s proven that our programs work: 95% of children served by Jumpstart Northern California make gains in key kindergarten-readiness skills over the school year, preparing them to succeed in school and in life.

As the only program of its kind, Jumpstart infuses the community with a new generation of dedicated and well-trained teachers; after serving with Jumpstart, 94% of Northern California college Corps members indicate that they intend to pursue careers in education or public service.

Strong local programming in Northern California has led to innovations that influence Jumpstart programs across the country. In addition to implementing our programs in preschool classrooms, Jumpstart Northern California also provides:

Family Workshop Series
Jumpstart in San Francisco provides a customizable Family Workshop Series which supports families in building literacy-rich home learning environments for their children. Each workshop, led by Jumpstart staff and Corps members, brings children together with their families for fun, interactive activities and provides a space for parents to try out new skills, such as sharing books with their child and pointing out vocabulary words in day-to-day activities.

Community Events
Jumpstart hosts language and literacy activities at community events throughout the city, including Jumpstart’s Read for the Record events in October and Jumpstart for a Day in correlation with the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Week of the Young Child celebration. Through these events, Jumpstart reaches additional children and their families, beyond those that we serve every week in the classroom.

Home Libraries
To support learning outside of the classroom, Jumpstart distributes more than a thousand age-appropriate books to families across Northern California to help build home libraries. Each book is prepared with multilingual stickers highlighting vocabulary words and ‘beyond the book’ activities, so that families can read together.
