Jumpstart in the Northeast
Massachusetts and Rhode Island
Currently, Jumpstart partners more than 800 college student and community volunteers to work with 1,800 Massachusetts and Rhode Island preschool children living in low-income neighborhoods in Greater Boston, Southeast Massachusetts, and the Merrimack Valley. Together, for the entire school year, they work on the language and literacy skills these children need to succeed not only in school, but also in life. Executive Director Bio
Susan Werley Slater, Executive Director, joined Jumpstart in July of 2004 as a Site Manager at Tufts University. After a year, Susan was promoted to a program director and then Senior Program Director. In 2007, she became the Executive Director of the Northeast Region.
Prior to working for Jumpstart she did her Masters work in Child Development at Tufts University. She focused on adolescent social and emotional development by conducting a qualitative study on peer group memberships in four different contextual settings and also policy and leadership within the field of Early Education. Susan has also worked for the Boston Children’s Museum where she helped design educational kits and conducted cultural development research. Susan is a Summa Cum Laude, Phi Betta Kappa graduate of McDaniel college where she completed an industrial efficiency study of pre-service teaching and educational partnerships between McDaniel College and the surrounding county public schools. Susan is a graduate of the Schott Fellowship in Early Care and Education, which is a one-year public policy leadership program designed to create the next generation of early care and education policy leaders in Massachusetts. During the fellowship, she published a paper on the state of Early Education and Care Assessment in Massachusetts. Susan is an alum of Lead Boston, a 2011 Boston Business Journal 40 under 40, and looks forward to continuing to make leadership commitments to serve Massachusetts.
