Jumpstart in the Midwest

Illinois

In the 2012-2013 program year, Jumpstart is partnering more than 200 Corps members to work with 800 preschool children living in low-income neighborhoods in and around Chicago and the Bloomington/Normal area. Together, for an entire school year, they will work on the language and literacy and socio-emotional skills these children need to succeed not only in school, but also in life.

Interested in partnering with Jumpstart Midwest for your office party, volunteer work or charitable donations? Jumpstart Midwest offers easy opportunities for volunteering, donation, or both with it's Family Home Learning Connection Family Involvement Kit Program. For more information, to schedule a volunteer event at your office, or to learn about sponsorship levels, contact Courtney Robinson at 312.867.7288 or at Courtney.Robinson@jstart.org

Basic Info

In 2003, Jumpstart expanded to Chicago, first partnering with Roosevelt University and DePaul University to work in a handful of Chicago preschools. Since then, Jumpstart has recruited and trained hundreds of Corps members to change thousands of children’s lives in Chicago and in Illinois. Just last year, the University of Chicago and Loyola University - Chicago joined four other universities as Jumpstart higher education partners in the region, and Jumpstart trained over 180 Corps members to implement the Jumpstart program in 21 preschool classrooms across the state. This year, Jumpstart Midwest is proud to be bringing on yet another university partner in Dominican University!

Programs

Jumpstart Midwest Dr. Seuss Day Celebration

Each year, Jumpstart Midwest joins Jumpstart regions across the country to host a celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Jumpstart Midwest gathers together all of its participating preschool partner children and their families at a large scale, day-long event in the heart of the city, providing them with group readings, craft activities and games centered around language and literacy skills.

Jumpstart Midwest's annual Dr. Seuss Day celebration provides corporate and community groups the chance to become involved with Jumpstart and its mission directly, through sponsorship as well as through volunteer opportunities. Whether it be underwriting the cost of a craft or game station, sponsoring the reading room at the event, or manning a booth or coordinating bus arrivals with a group of your volunteers, corporate and community organizations can partner with Jumpstart to make this year's Dr. Seuss Day celebration one that Jumpstart's preschool children will never forget.

The 2013 Dr. Seuss Day celebration will be held on Saturday, March 2nd. If you are interested in sponsorship and volunteer opportunities linked to the Dr. Seuss Day celebration, contact Courtney Robinson at 312.867.7288 or Courtney.Robinson@jstart.org

Jumpstart Midwest Parent Education Forums

Jumpstart Midwest will be hosting a four-part series on literacy and development for the parents of toddler and preschool children. Forum events are held at locations across the city, and will feature expert speakers and panelists, insightful film previews, and interactive demonstrations.

Jumpstart's first Parent Education Forum of the 2012-2013 year was held at Sulzer Library on October 3rd and featured Dr. Margaret Policastro, Professor and Director of Language and Literacy at Roosevelt University. She discussed access to books, building routines to support reading and literacy, and techniques for reading aloud to children. Each parent in attendance at the event received a free copy of Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad, Jumpstart's RFTR book, to begin the process of building their own home library!

Jumpstart Midwest Family Home Learning Connection

Jumpstart Midwest's Family Involvement Kits are a resource provided at no cost to families of preschool children participating in our program. The kits inform parents and caregivers about the importance of early literacy for their preschool child and provide additional activities to do at home that supplement concepts the preschool child is learning in class through Jumpstart's curriculum

If you are interested in sponsorship and volunteer opportunities linked to the Family Home Learning Connection Program, contact Courtney Robinson at 312.867.7288 or Courtney.Robinson@jstart.org
