“Coming from a lower income family added an extra pressure to become a high paid professional. The medical profession was the first one to come to mind. I entered college with the expectation of making it through the pre-med program and going straight through to medical school. However, major things namely a special group of children in the Jumpstart program changed my mind. Originally, Jumpstart was just a work-study job that allowed me to work with young kids, but it became so much more than that. Children’s smiling faces because of numerous realizations, whether they were learning how to write the first letter in their name or learning that red and yellow come together to make orange, became my reality. In my biology classes, molecular structures became smiling facial structures of 4 year olds. Yes, I could become"They make me cry, dance, laugh, sing, and appreciate life." a pediatrician, but in a doctor’s office it is not about those realizations. I switched my major to Child Development and gained access to the world of how and why these realizations occur. Through my experience in Jumpstart and my child related academics, I gained respect for what teachers do on a daily basis. They are truly the highest paid professionals; paid in many smiling faces.
“Originally I gave up Jumpstart to pursue fulfilling pre-med requirements. After a struggling summer, I realized that my passion lies with Jumpstart. The program has brought such great change in my life. I have best friends whose ages range from 2.9 to 5. They make me cry, dance, laugh, sing, and appreciate life. I wanted to be a team leader to guide other Corps Members through the same experience and give them the chance to say they made a difference in the lives of their new preschool best friends.”
