Corps Members

Corps members make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

Corps members are the heart of Jumpstart. While the majority are college students representing a wide array of higher education institutions, Corps members are also community volunteers interested in making a lasting impact on a child's life.

What's the role of a Jumpstart Corps member?

Corps members complete a minimum of 200-300 hours of service throughout the program year, which aligns with a typical school year. This intensive commitment makes a substantial impact in the life of a young child.

Corps members participate in the following activities:

  • Serve part-time, 8-12 hours per week, during the school year, including Jumpstart sessions with team and small groups of children, 4 hours per week (two sessions per week for two hours each)
  • Team planning meetings and session preparation, which includes planning, reflection, and/or training, 2-3 hours per week
  • 1-5 hours each week in a preschool classroom during the regular school day, supporting the classroom teacher and planned activities (the number of hours in the classroom is determined on the total hours commitment for the year)
  • 1 hour of individual planning and preparation for Jumpstart sessions
  • Communication with childrens' families and teachers
  • Participate in intensive pre-service and on-going trainings
  • Attend periodic service days to support the communities in which they serve

College and University Corps members

The majority of Jumpstart Corps members are college students serving at higher education institutions across the country. During the 2012-2013 program, Jumpstart is represented at 80 colleges and universities.

These students bring a range of experiences and educational backgrounds to their teams, including early childhood education, social sciences and humanities, human services, business, and science. 23% of our current members have a native language other than English and 44% are first generation college students.

During the 2012-2013 program, Jumpstart has over 4,300 Corps members serving through our College and Community Corps.
